You’ve heard it: “eating healthy is expensive.” If clean eating means $14 smoothies and grass-fed everything, yeah. But that’s not what it requires. The 80/20 of clean eating costs less than what most guys already spend.
Step 1: Cut the big two first (this is 80% of it)
1. Seed oils. Soybean, canola, corn, sunflower, safflower — in everything. Stop cooking with them at home and stop buying snacks built on them. 2. Soda and sugary drinks. Two sodas a day is ~70g of sugar before a single bite of food. Switch to water, sparkling water, or black coffee. This one change beats any supplement.
Do these two and you’ve handled the majority. Everything below is optimization.
Step 2: Build your cheap clean staples
Protein: eggs (~$3–4/dozen), chicken thighs, ground beef 80/20 (family packs, freeze), canned tuna/sardines, store-brand Greek yogurt (plain). Carbs: white rice in bulk, oats (big canister), potatoes/sweet potatoes, dried beans and lentils. Fats: real butter, olive oil, coconut oil.
Step 3: Know what NOT to overspend on
- Organic everything — conventional produce beats no produce; prioritize organic for berries if budget allows.
- Protein bars & “healthy” snacks — most are candy bars with marketing.
- Superfood powders — won’t save a bad diet.
- Bottled water — get a Brita pitcher (~$35) instead.
The rule: spend money on real food, not on products marketed to people who buy real food.
Step 4: Shop like you mean it
- Shop Aldi first — 20–30% cheaper, quality is good.
- Buy Whole Foods – Portion sizes can be less with REAL food
- Freeze meat on sale in portions.
- Cook twice, eat four times — double dinner portions.
Step 5: The 90-minute Sunday prep
Big batch of rice, 3–4 lbs baked chicken thighs, 2 lbs browned ground beef, a dozen hard-boiled eggs. Protein and carbs for the week, done. Each meal becomes assembly: reheat + rice. Five minutes.
Step 6: A sample $8–10 day of eating
Breakfast: 4 eggs in butter, oats with banana (~$2). Lunch: chicken thighs, rice, frozen broccoli (~$2.50). Snack: Greek yogurt, peanuts (~$1.50). Dinner: ground beef tacos or beef-potato skillet (~$3). ~180–200g protein, no seed oils, no soda — less than one Chipotle burrito.
What to drink
Drink: filtered water, black coffee, sparkling water, unsweetened tea. Stop: soda (regular and diet), energy drinks ($3/can), $6 coffee milkshakes, juice. A guy switching from two energy drinks a day to black coffee saves ~$150/month.
The bottom line
Eating clean on a budget isn’t about buying expensive food — it’s about buying simple food and skipping the expensive junk. Start with the big two, build your staples, stop paying the health-food markup.
